The building is huge, forbidding and gloomy looking, a fortress surrounded by heavy ironwork thrust into what appears to be granite walls, but there were a hundreds of bouquets and floral arrangements on the sidewalk out front, some stuck into the iron work. Also some balloons, teddy bears, and hand written expressions of sympathy, and some American flags. I put white roses, and the boys put white lilies. We each had a tacky votive candle in a glass jar from a Latino grocery store. Mine had the Holy Ghost (a winged dove with lots of flickering flames emanating downwards), Nick had the Virgin from Lourdes, and Ben's was Jesus showing the Sacred Heart. Nick wanted to buy one of the Voodoo/Santeria candles, a black one for praying for the death of your enemies but I thought that was probably not appropriate, although I appreciated the sentiment. Orthodox images would probably have been more appreciated but I have no idea where to buy Orthodox votive candles, especially on a Tuesday night. Anyway there were plenty of candles and they looked pretty. An older woman with a sorrowful Russian face hovered around the place, I guess she was keeping it orderly and making sure the candles stayed lit. It was raining as we drove there but had stopped raining before we got there. According to the embassy website you can send money to the families via wire transfer. Not sure that I would feel comfortable wiring money directly from my bank account to a Russian bank. You can also send a check.russianembassy.org
