"but there are some events that can wake up a country"

You push hard enough, and people wake up far more often than they roll over and play dead.

I admit, it does give credibility to the Russian accusations that Al Qaeda has influence in Chechnya. Who ever planned this clearly doesn't care what actually happens to the Chechens. No doubt they figure that world reaction to what the Russians are about to do will help their cause. They probably sold it as the horror the Russians will feel will cause them to give up because they are weak.

Some reports did describe very international list of the hostage takers, including Arabs. I don't know if the reports will be confirmed. The link between the Chechens and Al Qaeda is not really that hard to establish even prior to this attack.

There are some Chechen Arabs and most Chechens are Sunni Muslim so that description is not very telling.

As far as some kind of revenge attack on Chechens in Chechnya, it is a knee jerk reaction. I hope Putin will take his time to weigh his options before he acts. He should probably have a talk with Sharon. I think Sharon could give him a valuable advice of setting realistic (teritorial and political) goals, cutting his losses in some areas, sticking to his guns in others.

Brilliant! I see how successful Sharon has been in Israel. Putin and Sharon are cut from the same cloth.......and Putin has been pulling the same stunts with the Chechens as Sharon has done with the Palestinians. Ultimately, both will fail!
