...Some confusion on Tuesday was beyond officials' control.

An hour after polls opened, voter after voter at Park Elementary School near Charleston and Las Vegas boulevards repeatedly asked poll workers why John Kerry's name wasn't on the ballot.

After explaining the difference between a primary and general election for the umpteenth time, one female poll worker was clearly frustrated.


"Listen, it's simple," she told a confused voter.

"Just come back in two months and you'll get to vote for president. I promise."

Nevada on Tuesday became the first state to provide a paper trail for voters casting electronic ballots. Use of the machines, which was being eyed by officials nationwide, came off without a hitch, according to Lomax.

Turnout was low enough that the extra minutes required for the printers to generate a voter-verifiable record of ballots didn't cause delays, officials said.

Harald Praefke, a native of Germany who voted in his first American election on Tuesday at the Highland Hills Baptist Church in Henderson, used a voting machine that provided printed verification of his vote.

"I love it," he said. "It's great. It's easy, too."...
