I've noticed the same thing over the years. People insist on the two story or a one story with a "grand entrance" with 18 foot ceiling.

My parents house is the old fashioned CBS with steel shutters and low roof profile, all they lost in Frances is a few roof shingles (the regular kind of shingles, not the 100mph concrete shingles of death).

People need to wise up.

Exactly. And when I grew up here people were smart enough not to build in places that took the full brunt of hurricane force winds. Now they stick them anywhere they can to get a good view.
Similar to those people who keep building on the flood plains of the Mississippi river...I believe FEMA finally told them they weren't giving them anymore money to rebuild.

Speaking of the 60's-70's FL concrete block house. They typically were in the 1000-1200 sq ft range. Average now is somewhere around 2000 sq ft or more. A lot more in harms way. Add in a population of 17 million and you have major evacuation problems as we are seeing now.
