Germany had not attacked us. Italy had not attacked us. Japan might not have attacked us if we had not imposed an oil embargo that would have thwarted their war effort. The fact is, we gave up any claim to neutrality when we began supplying the UK and the USSR through the Lend- Lease program. Thank God, we took sides against the Axis, rather than doing a deal with it, and that is what led to war.

Italy, which welcomed us more than the other the Axis powers, was not especially ravaged, it was just plain sick of war. It is true that we bombed the others into submission, but Japan invented the kamikaze raid, and had the ancient bushido tradition of suppuku, what we call hari kari, in the face of dishonor, and yet it quit fighting and most Japanese officials did not die by their own hands. More importantly, the occupations of Germany and Japan lasted for over a decade each, and there was not, in that time, any insurgency such as we see in Iraq.

Hong Kong was under the military domination of Britain, and when it was to revert to China, there were protests, the citizens prefered Britain to China! It is all a matter of circumstances.

Of course we liberated Iraq, objectively, from a horrible tyrant. And the Iraqis are glad Saddam is gone, although they have mixed feelings about our continued presence. But a lot of their disenchantment has to do with our failure to stifle violence, and the feeling that things might settle down if we left. They generally support the interim government, and the security forces we are training, we shows that they are not too suspicious of us, in the end.........
