There is a current just off the Texas coast that flows north to south early in the hurricane season. When a hurricane comes into the Gulf low, it tends to direct them into Mexico. If they come in a little higher, they get pulled into the Texas Gulf coast. Later in the season, it reverses. And its influence on hurricanes changes. If a hurricane comes in higher, then it tends to push it towards Florida. But there are a lot of other factors that can also influence the path of a hurricane, so this isn't an absolute. After all, the one that kickstarted Dan Rather came in October...
