The French did little for us in the Revolutionary War that was intended as anything other than opposition to their enemy, the British. Their Wars with Britain and competition for trade ond colonization in the western world were their only concern. Had the British won, the French would have lost access to all ports and trading, with the exception of several small islands in the Caribbean.

Saddam was not a good person.

However, let me put it to you this way: If you were told that Iraq did not have WMD, that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11, that removing a secular Saddam would open up decades of repressed ethnic hostility and the possibility of a radical Islamic government in Iraq, and that doing so would cost $300 billion and 1,500 American lives, would you still favor invading Iraq?

George Bush Sr. made the wise decision when he wanted no part of occupying Iraq.

I remember all the reasons given by my government for fighting the bad, god-hating communist North Vietnamese at a cost of 50,000 dead - after the French bailed out, by the way. Well, that same North Vietnamese government is a now a favored trading partner of ours. The Bush administration is pulling the same nonsense in justifying the Iraqi war... in time we will look back and ask "What were we thinking?"

As one Iraqi said: "Before the war we had one Saddam... now we have many Saddams."
