Huge damage to Central America, especially Honduras, from hurricane Mitch. Andrew did Billions of damage in Florida. 935 Hurricane hit Miami, thousands dead, killed economy. See news for typhoon damage to China, Japan, etc. Frances dropped from Category 4 to Cat 2/3 and slowed enough to give people an extra day to leave. If it was a Cat 4, there would be hundreds dead. If it had been a Cat 4 and arrived early, might hit a thousand dead. **************** Part of the damage and risk , especially from wind, depends on construction quality. Mobile homes are like thrid world shanties - they go first. Florida contruction is good, the Bahamas is MUCH better - houses built by boat builders. Category 2 winds are not a problem for non-mobile homes in Florida, unless you get a tornado, but they are very localized. Cat 3 means trees are the biggest problem. Cat 4 will start to do lots of damage and kill residents in homes. Cat 5 can level anything that's not heavy concrete, so much stuff flying at 100+ mph that you can't survive outside. For Cat 5 you need a solid building, few windows - or leave. For water, storm surge, etc. people just have to leave. Usually that means just the coastal towns for FLorida. Parts of Louisana are as swampy as Bangaldesh. New Orleans is an especial problem - big lake (Ponchatrain) due north, millions of people, AND NOT ENOUGH ROADS. With a Cat 4 hurricane hitting when it's not low tide, 90% of New Orleans will be under 10-5 feet of water. You can't evacuate even 70% of New Orleans in 2 days - not enough roads. It would take about 4 days. Otherwise, you get a Bangladesh-like result - 50,000 people killed. Insurance companies in the US hold lots of stock, so if they have big claims, they sell stock to get money to pay them - this pushes down the stock market.
