What's amazing is to see folks who see this stuff day
after day & actually believe there is no liberal bias, or
worse, that there is a conservative bias in the mainstream
media. Then there are those folks who actually buy the BS,
from the liberal media lock stock & barrel even long after
it has been thoroughly discredited.

I'd rather be willing to change my mind as time & events
unfold than cling to totally discredited BS. IMO, keeping
an open mind & a reality based POV is so much easier than
having to live in an alternate reality.

Actually the parent companies of the New York Times and Los Angeles Times are competitors. The Tribune company owns the LA Times (NYSE: TRB), and several other papers.

Whereas the New York Times company, not only owns that paper, but several others as well. nytco.com

Whether you are a conservative, moderate, liberal, or libertarian, the consolidation of media ownership in this country should be a real concern. For example, most radio stations in most communities used to carry local news during morning and evening drive. Now very few do, so the only real steady source of radio news is NPR. If you like NPR, that’s fine but if you hate NPR that’s bad. There is plenty of talk radio on the air. But talk radio is certainly not news.
Fortunately there is a lot of diversity on the web, if one looks for it. Many folks, though, just take what they can get off TV and radio which is unfortunate. I’ve heard the satellite radio services have some news channels, but I doubt any of them are providing independently-produced news. Let’s face it, most Americans now get their news from Viacom, News Corp,Time-Warner, General Electric, Disney or NPR. Not a healthy situation. I spent more than 30 years in the news business (newspaper and broadcast). And I voted for Libertarian candidates for president as a kind of protest against what the major parties were serving up. I do plan to vote for John Kerry this year, only because I think Bush has been a disaster and will continue to be a disaster for the country if he is re-elected. I have no interest in getting into political rants here. That’s what the political threads are for.
Here are a few more links for anyone who wants to consider other aspects of media bias/media ownership (which are very closely related):

And remember, your reaction to whether a news story is good or bad, has a lot to do with whose ox is being gored. A really professional news organization will catch hell from all directions and have ownership that is prepared to deal with it.
