Your criteria are bogus. The Revolutionary War was optional; The Civil War was optional; the first World War was optional; even World War II was optional, since we could have sought a deal with the Axis rather than violating neutrality through Lend Lease and the embargo of oil to Japan, which precipitated Pearl Harbor. We fought the Revolutionary War because a sufficient number deemed the Imperial government oppressive; we fought the Civil War in order to preserve the Union, because, whether abolitionist or not, too many people deemed the preservation of slavery a bad reason to secede; we fought the first World War because of an inherent tilt towards the democracies, causing our shipping to be more vulnerable to German attack; and we fought WWII because of our revulsion over the Nazis and the actions of Japan in China, and our strong preference for the Allies, which led us to violate neutrality until attacked. In no case were all alternatives exhausted, nor was it ever a pure case of self- defense. We simply reached a point where most people decided we had to take a stand, rather than be bullied or join the bully boys.
