I'm not sure any screening can be 100% effective.

I have a little tool blade about half the size of a box cutter that I used to carry when I traveled. It was helpful for cutting items out of newspapers, opening those damned plastic wraps that encase everything one purchases and a bunch of other little tasks. It's pretty tiny and I never had a problem carrying it on airplanes before 9/11. From time to time I might have carried a full sized single edge blade or a box cutter if I were visiting a plant with extensive boxed inventory. They wouldn't let one on with a switchblade, perhaps, but there just wasn't the concern then about sharps that exists after 9/11.

Let's face it - a 99 cent bic pen can kill if used properly. Screening is only one step in the security process.
