Let me give you an analogy. I once worked with a man who was Jewish but he had met a stunning young woman who would only be intimate with him if he converted to a form of very extreme Christian fundamentalist religion. So he did. ONe of the things this group did was "save" people from the devil. This is how they achieved that objective: They identified, by means known only to them, people who were "possessed by the devil". It could be somebody they saw only for a moment in a public place. The would then take this person against their will and hold them in captivity in the basement of a house and deny them food and water and creature comforts. Eventually and inevitably, "the devil" would come out of these people and the religious sect would be vindicated in their prediction that the person was indeed possessed by the devil. They would then "save" the person and release them. If you treated me the way the Israelis treat the Palestinians, or if you treated me the way Russia treats people who live in Chechnya, or if you treated me the way the US treats people who live in Iraq -- then it is possible, very possible, that you would discover to your satisfaction that I am indeed possessed by the devil -- of course your goal would be to then tag my home and blow me up in my sleep, or in some other manner find me and kill me. And you would say "we are spreading democracy".
