The past 100 years of American history clearly demonstrates this; all Democratic Presidents in this Century have shown interest in furthering the American empire by military force (WWI, WW2, Viet Nam, Yugoslavia, etc.) That being said, it is also clear that the only major party that has shown any inclination of challenging our empire has been the Democratic party. The Republicans are clearly on the side of militarism, empire building, and doing what big business wants done to expand their markets. They've convinced so many American that this is the proper path to pursue that even the Democrats, who sometimes try to persue a different course of action, do what they can to keep up with the Republicans on militarism. If I could give people ONE reason to vote for Kerry over Bush, it would be because Kerry is suppossedly committed to lessening our dependence on foreign oil. This would be a very good direction for our country to go in to lessen our militarism, as the empire is mainly fueled by foreign oil and the justification for much of our recent militarism is foreign oil. I really don't expect Kerry to radically change our energy situation, but it would be a much better direction than Bush is leading us in. The best thing an individual American can do to fight our empire tendencies and militarism is to support alternative fuels. If we can eventually make our country energy independent, the empire and military will be greatly diminished. Look at it this way, there might not have been a 9/11 terrorist attack if it wasn't for oil being so important to our empire builders.
