"The world needs to come up with some process for dealing with these ... By the time an ad hoc solution is found, these problems often become too difficult to reverse, and cause too much suffering."

Kev!!! you are close to a break through. The world wont, never did, never will. The world presents scenarios to test the integrity of our principles. Its up to you ... and I, and each and every one of us to take a stand for noble human endeavor, inspite of the negative indicators telling us not to. These issues are soul based.

Or, should we simply take a more hands off approach, and let these crises sort themselves out?

the U.N. is the best we have now, and perhaps the best we can do, perhaps with some adjustments. it's the ivory coast where France is trying to do something right now?

perhaps a silly analogy (i'm often silly) but if we see two people in a fight on the street, sometimes we'd intervene and other times not. generally, if one person is down and getting pounded, it is the honorable thing to intervene.

motives are the crunch, imo. and an honest rendering of why to take an action. all that was lost, imo, with iraq. it still might have been pulled off with world support and a Plan.

i think it'd be nice to see Powell around in a Kerry administration. i think it could do good to hear his voice, not this drowned-out shell we've had for a Secretary of State. i don't ever recall having such a diminished, marginalized SofS.

in other words, i don't know. ::smile:: it's a good question for a national conscience meditation.

It's like our health care system. If you're about to die, we'll treat you in an emergency room. If your just sick and could be healed with some cheaper treatment, forget it.
