I used to visit my mother at work sometimes in the early 1970's. She used a Linotype machine. Those were enormous, spitting out chunks of hot metal into a bucket. Then she switched to the Compugraphic in the late 1970's, which was a nasty machine but at least not hot metal, and was much smaller. Nasty because the typesetters never cleaned them out. I would call it "giving the machine an enema" but it kept the machine from putting out crap, not vice versa. I did not set much type, mostly layout, pasteup and prepress, but could use a manual Varityper, very clean but an absolute bear to correct. People would probably realize how different type faces are if they trying waxing the paper and pasting on corrections, so they could see what happens when the lines were a little bit further apart or the type was a little bit bigger.

My experience with font technology is spotty, but it dates all the way back to hot lead. I was being cautious because I am not familiar with the IBM Executive Typewriter that CB mentioned. What I would like to see is a full FBI investigation that follows up the chain of custody for the documents that CBS released. If these documents are forged, someone should go to jail. -Snow P.S. Do you suppose these things were forged by the French, like those fake Niger uranium documents? <ggg>
