Ted,

Re: "CBS spokeswoman Kelli Edwards declined to respond to questions raised by
experts who examined copies of the papers at the request of The Washington Post,
or to provide the names of the experts CBS consulted."

Hmmmm ... Sounds like CBS is doing a "major" CYA as we speak.

Make It So,

"Even CBS's is backing off from the claim that the documents were authenticated."

Funny.........that's not what CBS has said:

"CBS News released a statement yesterday standing by its reporting, saying that each of the documents "was thoroughly vetted by independent experts and we are convinced of their authenticity." The statement added that CBS reporters had verified the documents by talking to unidentified people who saw them "at the time they were written."

Which amounts to the fact that they don't have the original documents to authenticate or direct evidence that the copies they have are authentic. They have the word od some people who claim they saw the documents when they where written. They would have just as much evidence by having the word without the documents. It all depends on those statements.
