That article in its entirety is a good read. I don't like picking it apart in pieces though. It basically explains exactly how both the Ds and Rs conspire over generations to ensure that our march towards American global hemogeny runs unabated no matter who sits in the White House. I liked a lot of Clinton's domestic policies (a strength of any Democrat), but there's no doubt that Clinton continued the military interventionism that has been a hallmark of our foreign policy for decades.

I don't agree with the author's conclusions though, while I see Kerry basically continuing the status quo and trying to rebuild our Cold War alliances, I don't see him being so blatantly militaristic as Bush. Bush's whole presidency and image is based on militarism, which is exactly why he did that macho photo opp of landing on the aircraft carrier to announce "Mission Accomplished". Bush isn't really interested in solving our energy problems either. Moving away from foreign oil, is the one thing I can see that would really change the power structure in our country.

I see the author's point that Bush might just discredit America so much so in the eyes of the world with his unilaterialism, that he'll paint himself into a corner and his military options will be limited. Whereas, Kerry might rebuild our alliances and thus rebuild our ability to lead world affairs and take military action in concert with allies. But, that sort of thinking certainly hasn't prevented Bush and his neocon advisors from pursuing wars up to this point, I don't see why it would suddenly change?
Kerry is the candidate who might move this country in a more progressive and less militaristic direction. I can't imagine it being any worse than under Bush.
