As a chess and tennis player, I've often found the most effective attack on an opponent is the one he uses on you. It's a tell that shows an opponent's fear and weakness, that he's projected on you.
I think this Smearvet thing is turning around nicely, and revealing that Bush has much more to hide in his past than Kerry does. Kerry has been after political office for a long time, and has led his life appropriately. Bush didn't want to be a politico until he hooked up with Karl Rove. They've done a lot of scrubbing, but you can't scrub people and no scrub can be perfect.
