China permits Taiwan to have a high degree of autonomy for historic and practical reasons -- but it is by no means confused, as you seem to be, about the status of Taiwan. If Taiwan tried to change its status it would be game over. We sometimes pretend that we could somehow "defend" Taiwan -- but this would not be the case. Our resolve to "defend" Taiwan -- while recognizing that Taiwan is nothing more than a province of China -- is paper-thin compared to the depth of the Chinese resolve to keep China as it is -- one China, in which Taiwan is merely a province with a considerable degree of political autonomy.
