Rather is toast. His reputation is now damaged beyond repair. The fact that his stupidity helped W get re-elected will torment him the rest of his life.

And CBS still doesn't get "new media." The CBS representative (actually a former executive) on Tony Snow's show tonight actually claimed that web bloggers were just a bunch of people sitting around their house in their pajamas (or something close to that). He came off as clueless and very defensive.

CBS has been caught with their pants down and they are having a lot of trouble getting their pants back up again.

I wonder how much money this will ultimately cost Viacom? They are almost certain to lose ad revenue either because advertisers will pull spots from 60 Minutes or the decline in the rating of the show will result in a lower cost for ad time. At some point, the corporate guys will need to step in and stop the bleeding.

Rather left the door open for a retraction. Maybe they'll bury it in the middle of the Hurricane Ivan disaster coverage next week.
