There were indeed IBM Executive typewriters which had a primitive version of proportional spacing. Instead of only one width per letter, there were several, three or four or five, I can't pin it down.

But modern computer typefaces have a different width for all characters, or should I say each.

At any rate, the most recent commentary by Hodges, who was Rather's corroborating witness, is that CBS lied to him over the phone, told him that the memos were in Killian's handwriting, read him the memos over the phone, and that he told them, "well, if that's what he said, that's what he meant." Now he says he was duped and the documents are forged via computer generation.

As does everybody but CBS, NYTimes, LATimes, Boston Globe, Terry McAuliffe, John Edwards, and Kerry supporting bloggers. Kerry as yet has not been heard from, he's still hiding from reporters.

I wonder what will happen next? Jason Blair, please call your office.
