King David Hotel? Deir Yassin? Possibly the failure of the European partisans to adopt terrorist methods had as much to do with a lack of means and access as with culture.

The members of the Irgun insist to this day that both were military offensives. King David hotel was British military HQ, and the Irgun says (& the historians I've read believe it) that they phoned a warning to the hotel, but the Brits chose to ignore it. The Irgun also hotly claims that Deir Yassin was a military engagement with Iraqi troops in the village. The historians aren't as sure about this one, but there's no doubt that Deir Yassin was one of the towns being contested in April 1948 because they were essential territory to the Arab siege of Jerusalem, which the Irgun & Haganah were trying to break. There is also not a doubt that the Arabs themselves hyped Deir Yassin to the skies as an enormous massacre complete with many rapes, and unintentionally fomented a panic among Palestinians, who often had no news except what they heard on the radio.

Again, to repeat the obvious, the Haganah disapproved of the Irgun's methods and brought them to heel in June 1948.

Possibly the failure of the European partisans to adopt terrorist methods had as much to do with a lack of means and access as with culture.

This is a damn silly remark. It takes no special 'means' to blow up a marketplace or take a school hostage. It's easy as pie, all you need are some weapons. It's just that for the Irgun to do so would have instantly discredited those who did it in the eyes of their followers, and tainted their cause in the eyes of the world. Look how Israelis are still fendiing off cries of "Count Bernadette!" "King David Hotel!" "Deir Yassin!", often from the very same groups who have committed a 1000 acts of unambiguous terrorism for every 1 that can be attributed to a Jewish group.
