You may not like those in office, or their politics, but Rove, Rumsfeld, and Rice are some of the smartest folks in Washington. Not to mention Powell and others.

Rumsfield brilliantly led the war in Iraq. Brilliantly. The peace is another matter, but leading peace is not the job of the Secretary of Defense. He did his job, won the war. Too bd we didn't have others equally good in place to win the peace.

Rove got Bush elected over Gore. You may hate him for doing so, but if you don't think that was competent brilliance, you don't know what you're taling about.

You have to evaluate competence on the basis of what people intend to accomplish. On that score, sure, there are mishaps, but on the whole yes, these are a competent bunch of smart folks. It's just that you don't like what they're accomplishing.

Kerry, for example, may be smart, but he srue isn't competent. If he were, he would be at least 12 points ahead in the polls.
