WASHINGTON — A key source who was named to back up CBS News' claims about the authenticity of documents used in a report on President Bush's (search) Air National Guard service has recanted his support, saying the network got the information wrong.

Retired Major Gen. Bobby Hodges (search), a key source behind a "60 Minutes" story that claims Bush shirked his guard duty, said that now that he has seen the memos, he does not believe they are authentic. Hodges told FOX News that CBS did not call him until two days before the piece aired on the network last Wednesday night, and never offered to show him the memos. He said the network only wanted to discuss their content, not their authenticity.

Senator John Kerry, the presumed Democratic presidential candidate who is trading on his Vietnam war record to campaign against President George W Bush, tried to defer his military service for a year, according to a newly rediscovered article in a Harvard University newspaper.

Senator Kerry on the campaign trail in Iowa

He wrote to his local recruitment board seeking permission to spend a further 12 months studying in Paris, after completing his degree course at Yale University in the mid-1960s.

The revelation appears to undercut Sen Kerry's carefully-cultivated image as a man who willingly served his country in a dangerous war - in supposed contrast to President Bush, who served in the Texas National Guard and thus avoided being sent to Vietnam.

The Harvard Crimson newspaper followed a youthful Mr Kerry in Boston as he campaigned for Congress for the first time in 1970. In the course of a lengthy article, "John Kerry: A Navy Dove Runs for Congress", published on February 18, the paper reported: "When he approached his draft board for permission to study for a year in Paris, the draft board refused and Kerry decided to enlist in the Navy."

ohn Kerry has often implied that he volunteered for the military right after college. But Kerry petitioned his draft board for a student deferment.
..........................................................
When he approached his draft board for permission to study for a year in Paris, the draft board refused and Kerry decided to enlist in the Navy ... The top choice was the Navy Reserves where the duty commitment was shorter and a larger proportion of the period could be served stateside on inactive duty.

John Kerry's service record indicates that on Feb. 18, 1966, he enlisted in the United States Naval Reserves, status "inactive," not in the U.S. Navy. These details are conveniently left out of all pro-Kerry biographies. Douglas Brinkley records that Kerry entered Officer Candidate School in Newport, R.I.; however, again he fails to note that Kerry was seeking to be an officer of the U.S. Naval Reserves.

As graduation approached, Kerry knew that he had three choices: be drafted, seek a deferment for graduate school, or join up and position himself to become an officer. ``It was clear to me that I was going to be at risk,'' Kerry recalled. ``My draft board . . . said, `Look, the likelihood is you are probably going to be drafted.'

After graduating from Yale, Kerry applied for a draft deferment for one year (a common way of avoiding service), but it was denied. Hence he joined the United States Navy. He served as an Electrical Officer on the USS Gridley.

Kerry's resume, however, did not yet contain any combat experience. As one with political ambitions, he needed combat in his resume. Hence John Kerry volunteered for Swift Boat duty, at the time a relatively safe combat duty. Swift Boats were operating under operation MARKET TIME and performed coastal patrol.

Kerry arrived in Vietnam in December 1968 at Cam Rahn bay. He received his first wound shortly thereafter, but his Commanding Officer, Hibbard, has stated that he refused to authorize the award because he felt no enemy actions was involved. The wound was a small scratch with a small piece of shrapnel in it. The doctor who treated the wound reported that Kerry's crew stated the wound was from a round fired from an M-79 grenade launcher by Kerry, not in combat, but at some rocks that were too near the boat. [SOURCE]

Subsequently Kerry was awarded the purple heart but his CO still does not know how. See below for a possible explanation.

To Kerry's surprise, the mission of Swift Boats was changed to the very dangerous river patrol mission. This assignment involving traveling narrow rivers to draw enemy fire, and responding with the weapons on board the ship. During that time Kerry was awarded two more purple hearts for minor wounds. After receiving his third purple heart, about 3 1/2 months into his tour, Kerry requested assignment out of the combat zone and became an Admiral's Aide in the United States.

While on active duty as an Admiral's Aid, Kerry, a pilot, flew anti-war activist Adam Walinsky to speak at various anti-war events.

Kerry requested early separation from active duty in order to run for congress, which was granted, resulting in a transfer to the Navy Reserve. This was erroneously reported as an honorable discharge by The Boston Globe, and Kerry did not correct it. [SOURCE]

Kerry ran for congress but failed quickly. He then seized upon the Vietnam Veterans Against The War, a radical group funded by Jane Fonda and other Hollywood Figures, as an opportunity to gain fame. With his medals and his speaking skills, Kerry quickly became a leader of VVAW and its best spokesman.

While a member of VVAW, Kerry threw away his medals, or perhaps someone else's medals - in any case, an act dishonoring any who had won those medals. He now constantly brags about having one those medals.

While a member of VVAW, Kerry met with the enemy in Paris.

While a member of VVAW, Kerry gave numerous speeches around the country, spreading his distorted and anti-American view of the war as far and wide as he could.

While a member of VVAW, Kerry attended a meeting where the assassination of US Senators was discussed. He recently unsuccessfully tried to cover up his attendance at the meeting.

The FBI and Kerry's fellow VVAW members concluded that he was simply an opportunist, using the organization for his own political purposes.

Kerry's most infamous act while a Naval Officer and member of the VVAW was his perjurious speech to the Senate Foreign Relations committee in 1971.

The speech made many serious (an untrue) charges against the United States, painted those who served in Vietnam as psychologically damaged monsters who daily committed the worst of atrocities, and recommended immediate and unconditional surrender, which would not only have abandoned the South Vietnamese, but also the US POWs in the Hanoi Hilton. The speech was played by the tormenters of those POWS in an attempt to break their will. They heard Kerry recommend their abandonment!

Kerry recently tried to cover up his status as a Naval Officer during his anti-war activities and his meeting with the enemy. Kerry's resume on his web site showed military service from 1966-1970, and then reserve service from 1972-1978, a very unusual pattern. When he was forced to post some of his military records, it turned out that Kerry had been a member of the Naval Reserve during that period. [SOURCE]

Recently, a possible explanation for how Kerry received his three purple hearts so quickly, allowing him to leave Vietnam not long after arriving there, has arisen. A fellow officer from his unit stated:

When he got his third Purple Heart, three of us told him to leave. We knew how the system worked and we didnt want him in Coastal Division 11. Kerry didnt manipulate the system, we did.
