I think that Islamic radicals do have a fighting chance to actually get what they want, which is - for starters - to capture political power in much of the Muslim world.

We got dragged in into a religious war, but the concept of people dedicating their lives to fighting a bloody war for God is very foreign to us at this point in our history. We don't really understand our opposition. Religious people, like President Bush, might be able to understand better what Islamists want - and what's actually going on out there. Militant atheists, in my experience, won't even try.

" I can relate to nothing at all about them, which discomfits me no end. "

It is really quite simple. Of the billion+ Muslims there is a substantial % who believe in a literal interpretation of the Koran. My estimate is more than 10% which of course would mean 100,000,000+. The Koran tells the believers to KILL the infidels. The result is a big protracted problem for those who refuse to believe in the Koran. Death and destruction for decades. For them death, as a martyr, is preferred to a life of love (thy neighbor).

Of course, this is not a new development since it started at the very beginning of Islam in the 7th century. Note how I was unable to superscript the "th".
