In a quick search I could only find a comment that Rather had completed "a short stint" in the Marines.

CB, Has Rather proven that rheumatic fever damaged his heart. Just having the illness does not, always, damage the heart. I had it when I was 4 years old, and the doctor told my mother that it would damage my heart, or cripple my joints. Not only has neither of these things happened to me, but 5 doctors have told me that my heart is as strong as a horse's.

Since Rather is known to lie, this could, very well, be just another of his lies, or diversions.
