But the article also convinced me that if you don't like someone (and not just Kerry alone), you will/can find any number of reasons to dislike him/her, including non sequiturs and what comes from grasping at straws. I am sure Kerry's critics have evolved as human beings over the last thirty years or so. The irony is that they would not grant that Kerry himself has also evolved over those years and that his overall worldview of geopolitics and politics in America has been modified according to his present perceptions of the current situation in relation to the past. Kerry himself has honestly admitted that in his testimony of 1971, he "mis-spoke" about certain things and was "way over the top." Yet his detractors relentlessly continue to stigmatize him for "inconsistencies" and "flip-flops" and whatnot, even though what he said in 1971 or thereabouts were factual. Of course, they now appear to be weird or outrageous or even unpatriotic as a consequence of his detractors' deliberate and opportunistic manipulation/dissembling of the facts. By the way, Mr. Joe Klein of TIME wrote "What the Swifties Cost America" in the 6th Sept. 2004 edition. You will do well to read that article if you have not already read it. It bears on what I have written in the preceding paragraph. As an individual, my view about many things have changed over the years, much in some instances, little in others and, in a few instances I made a complete 180 to reflect my new comprehension of things and values. I am sure so many others have done likewise, too. However, in Kerry's case, the Republican campaign propagandizes that any modification or qualification by Kerry of anything he had said is tantamount to a "flip-flop" or "inconsistency" which cannot but impact negatively on his and judgement and sanity and fitness to be the next C-in-C. It seems to me America has never stooped so low as it has now in the use of despicable tactics for character assassination. And the tactics have succeeded somewhat, thanks to a flawed education system which has been churning out vast numbers of unthinking semi-literates, 'sheep' and 'parrots' that function as excellent henchmen for propagandists.
