Fair minded people automatically make allowances for goofs.

Of course, but when is it a goof and when does it signal a relevant lack of education or smarts. If my plumber says "ain't," I don't give it another thought. If my lawyer does, I start to question his qualifications. I don't think that's a question of fair mindedness. People signal us about who they are in many ways including grammar and bumper stickers. While it may not be fair to read too much into them, neither are they useless as indicators.
