re "HDR moves the world ..."

Eric, despite your guffaw and sarcasm, I take Dr. Irwin Jacobs' statements ... at the 2004/05/24 Lehman Global Wireless Conference quite literally.

"HDR was a high data rate technology. It's now led to both EVDO which is now commercial, EVDV which is the next version of 1x that will be perhaps 1 1/2 year or so out, and HSDPA which is a high speed downlink packet access which is a higher data rate capability for WCDMA. So a lot of the techniques ... we are focused very much on how we improve data capabilities put that on CDMA ... on the various forms of CDMA ... and that is now moving ahead rather nicely."

Dr J. was talking about HDR at the Feb 2000 annual meeting. I don't recall hearing anything about HSDPA for much later, probably until 2003. For a long time it wasn't clear if there would be an HDR proxy on the WCDMA track. Indeed Andrew Viterbi was emphasizing the separate channel for data and was much behind developing HDR before leaving Q and joining the board at Flarion. Is first mover equivalent to having an IP advantage? Not always, but often it does. So what are the precursers for HSDPA from other companies? Who contributed important IP besides Q and where did this IP originate?
