Bush has the lowest approval rating of any incumbent in recent times. Also the hgihest disapproval rating. Yes, Bush is currently in the lead slightly because of the polarized electorate and a post-convention bump, but his disapprovals are so high and policies so unpopular and dishonest that he is skating forward on very thin ice. The smear campaign against Kerry hurt him and fooled a lot of people into thinking negatively of him, but now it's Bush's turn. Bush did go AWOL and lie about it and did snort cocaine. He is also not the nice honest guy a lot of people think he is, he is frankly, quite the opposite.
