<<what does it mean for qcom future>>

It means an increased market for Q if HSDPA is successful. Not only in providing chips but increased handset sales. In other words, MO MONEY!

HSDPA and Qualcomm

John,

<< what does it mean for qcom future >>

Not much, positively or negatively, so far as I can see.

China aside, the majority of technology adoption decisions and choice of migration paths have already been made, so there is no real impact on that score.

To match the capabilities of HSDPA from a downlink data transmission perspective, CDMA2000 C/D allows aggregation of 3 channels and by doing so can match the theoretical peak downlink speeds of HSDPA. Uplink speeds of both CDMA2000 Release D and IS-856 Revision A will be faster than HSDPA phase 1 initially, but they'll wind up being about the same when the standard is fully mature and commercialized. It's a draw from that point of view.

On the chipset side Qualcomm, like all their competitors, will incorporate HSDPA in future chipset designs, and do a fine job accommodating it.

Best,

- Eric -
