Their attempt at a smear is already officially categorized as an urban legend: Kerry has no say in H.J. Heinz & Co. Neither does his wife. In fact...while it is accurate to say that the H.J. Heinz Company operates factories outside the United States, it is not true that Teresa Heinz Kerry — much less her husband, John Kerry — owns that business or has any say in, or culpability for, its operations. Therefore, the conclusion that Kerry is a hypocrite for decrying corporate outsourcing is based on false premises. It's a baseless smear, in other words. In a statement released on March 22, 2004, the H.J. Heinz Company affirmed the following: Neither Mrs. Heinz Kerry nor Senator Kerry nor any of the Heinz trusts or endowments — either individually or collectively — holds a significant percentage of shares of the H. J. Heinz Company. In 1995 the Heinz Endowments and family trusts sold a large percentage of Heinz shares in a secondary share offering to diversify their holdings. As a result, their current holdings are under 4 percent. Incidentally, the implication that H.J. Heinz has "relocated" U.S. factories abroad is equally fallacious. John Heinz III, A REPUBLICAN senator from Pennsylvania who was killed in an airplane crash on April 4, 1991. They had been married for 25 years and had three now-grown children. Teresa was the principal benefactor of Sen Heinz's will and inherited a large fortune, a minor part of which was Heinz stock. She is not a significant shareholder in Heinz, she has never been on the Board of Directors of Heinz and she has never had any management role at Heinz. John Kerry has never had any connection to Heinz whatsoever. Heinz is a large multi-national corporation with operations around the world. Many of their foreign operations are foreign companies that they bought that produce food products for their local populations. Other companies that they established in foreign countries produce food for sale in those countries. The perishable nature of the food business usually demands that production facilities are located close to their customers. Like most large corporations, most of Heinz Corp campaign contributions go to REPUBLICANS. Many of their contributions go to Sen Rick Santorum, who is one of the most right-wing politicians in the country and the REPUBLICAN successor to Teresa's late husband, John Heinz. Teresa despises Santorum and has referred to him as "Forrest Gump with an attitude" and said he was "short of public service and even shorter on accomplishments." Does that sound like Teresa has any influence on the management of Heinz? The guy who really does run the H.J. Heinz company is William R. Johnson, Chairman and CEO.
