I recall about 18 months all together.

It doesn't take that long to learn how to fly a jet, but this one was extremely fast and carried very sophisticated armament and avionics equipment. The best we had at the time. The pilot had to be an expert on all of that.

GW had the eqivalent of 10 weeks of full 8 hour workdays flying it. That does not include extensive classroom training and probably several times that much simulator training.
