CBS was behind the fraud.

Complicit in the fraud.

At the risk of triggering a nuance-allergy-reaction, I submit that it's possible to regard the documents as frauds without rushing to judgment that Rather or anyone else at CBS was behind the fraud.

You can believe that CBS was hoodwinked only until you hear about the the authentication shopping. If it turns out that CBS deliberately gave only a single document to 6 experts and 5 said, 'phony as hell' but the 6th said, 'the signature looks okay', and they went with the 6th and suppressed mention of the other 5, then we are not talking about innocent dupes any more.

Consider the file folder that moved around the office at CBS. It held both types of documents, those from 1970 and the forgeries. They would have been sitting next to each other on their desk. Everyone working on the story would have been looking at both simultaneously. And the documents CBS has are in better shape than the ones we are looking at, they have been processed less.

Some of the experts, given 1 document apiece by CBS, told CBS the documents were frauds before the story ran. CBS had the other two obviously fraudulent documents in hand and did not reveal them at the time of the story.

Strange, that cow in the field isn't even chewing her cud.
