The human dynamic in response to being caught in a "problem" is interesting. If Clinton had apologized immediately his Monica problem would have raged - and passed. Failure to admit builds the effort to break down the wall. Rahter Gate would be history by now if a retraction would have been issued upon review - and some no one had been paid a life's salary and resigned.

But no - like the slickster, like Nixon - the failure to admit compounds over and over and over - now - it is a challenge to the legitimate media and anyone on the right to force the admittal.

Bottom line - admit "mistakes" quickly before they become clear unexcusable lies.

"We established to our satisfaction that the memos were accurate or we would not have put them on television. There was a great deal of coroborating [sic] evidence from people in a position to know. Having said that, given all the questions about them, we believe we should redouble our efforts to answer those questions, so that's what we are doing."

From the Bablefish translator, CBS-ese to English:

"We established to our satisfaction that the memos were accurate or we would not have put them on television."

Translation: "Of course the memos are accurate. How dare you question an organization as great as CBS!

"There was a great deal of coroborating [sic] evidence from people in a position to know."

Translation: "Our contacts in the Kerry Campaign and Terry McAuliffe's secretary vouched for the documents."

"Having said that, given all the questions about them, we believe we should redouble our efforts to answer those questions, so that's what we are doing."

Translation: "We're hoping this blows over in a few days. Now, shut up and trust us. After all, we're CBS."
