It is hard to blame him for wanting to run the foreigners out of town given the repeated attempts of foreigners to exploit Vietnam's resources to their own advantage -- the French were not in Vietnam to spread democracy -- they were there to protect their coffee and rubber (rubber and coffee that the Vietnamese had this crazy idea belonged to them).
