<The South wanted to remain free> The south was most certainly not free, and Ho was most certainly a nationalist first and a communist second. It is hard to blame him for wanting to run the foreigners out of town given the repeated attempts of foreigners to exploit Vietnam's resources to their own advantage -- the French were not in Vietnam to spread democracy -- they were there to protect their coffee and rubber (rubber and coffee that the Vietnamese had this crazy idea belonged to them).
