At the outset, soon after 9/11, the Bushies convinced ~60% of the American people that Iraq was responsible for funding Al-Qaeda operations. So Bush went to war in Iraq over the objections of the French and Germans and others in the belief that Iraq was a pushover. Unfortunately for them, it has turned out to be far more costly and damaging to America than he had thought. Yet he continues to lie to Americans that the war is being won. In a way, this reminds me of what Johnson and Nixon used to tell Americans during the period 1968-1975 that the war was being won and that the troops would be returning soon. Yet year after year, the war raged on and Americans continued to return in body bags. In Vietnam, Americans had a very tough time. For one thing, most of the fighters were unwilling to fight. For another, it was very difficult to tell friend from foe as both North and South Vietnamese looked so much alike. And of course, there were two-timing South Vietnamese who regularly betrayed American troops or led them into ambushes. It is easy to imagine that history will repeat itself in Iraq. With no experience in guerilla warfare and being used to living the good, soft and cushy life in America, most American troops will soon find themselves in a hell hole in Iraq and want out in a jiffy. A logical way out is to cut one's losses and withdraw with honor. Unfortunately, this is unthinkable and unacceptable to many Americans. Anyway, sooner or later, an equilibrium will be reached. We shall see.
