These weapons were not common before the law, and were not even banned by the law. The law banned importation or manufacturing certain weapons defined by either being very specific weapons on a list, or by have certain characteristics like bayonet lugs and flash suppressors. It didn't ban possession or sale of even these weapons, just manufacturing or importing new ones. And new, functionally identical weapons could be manufactured or imported if they where not on the list and did not have bayonet lugs, flash suppressors, ect. All of the weapons effected where semi-auto, one shot per trigger pull weapons. Fully automatic weapons have been heavily regulated for a long time under other laws and where not covered by this law. In short whether or not you agree with gun control there was little point to this law because it didn't provide any potentially useful or important restriction on weapons. You couldn't make a new AR-15 or semi-auto version of an AK-47 but you could buy an existing one, or make or import weapons with the same capabilities. Also these type of weapons where not widely used by criminals. Handguns are cheaper and easier to conceal and are used much more often by criminals, shotguns are better for massive close in fire power, and the few criminal sniper types would do better with many common hunting type rifles with a scope added. Tim
