Fewer acres of corn raised today than 40 years ago. Highways and urban sprawl have eaten a lot of acres. The paper had a corn contract from an elevator from 1901 and published it in 2001. 1901 they were paying $2.01, 2001 corn was going for $1.98 and a 1901 buck went a lot longer.

You're giving farmers too much credit. Tax credits are meant to encourage growth in a sector. Now back when ethanol first was used to reduce pollution gas was about 60 cents a gallon. Imagine the screams if the government said we had to use ethanol and it would cost $1.20.
