A small Canadian company named Iogen has developed a process to produce ethanol from cellulose. Right now they are using farm waste products as the input. I expect they could also use perennial crops like alfalfa that produce their own nitrogen, thus reducing those fertilizer inputs...

The University of Minnesota is working on a way to run fuel cells from ethanol, which would be more efficient than burning ethanol in an internal combustion engine. And you don't have to distill the ethanol as much, so there would be further energy savings on the input side...
