all machine guns are assault weapons.

FYI .. that assault weapons ban had nothing to do with machine guns.

Those were already against another law passed decades ago and is still in effect ..

Criminals use machine guns to commit crimes.

All of that is against existing laws.

Those laws just need to be enforced.

You question should be reversed. The assault weapon ban became is simply stupid because they wrote ridiculous definitions for assault weapon. It became more of what it looked like than it's actual function.

All machine guns would be assault weapons.

The answer is no. An assault weapon is a term that did not even exist in the dictionary before the Assault Weapons Ban. Legislators made it up hoping that people would automatically assume they were machine guns to aid with the passage of the ban. The confusion occurs due to the real dictionary term assault rifle. Assault rifle is a real term and describes a select fire machine gun that fires a cartridge larger than a pistol cartridge but small than a high powered rifle cartridge. Select fire means that with the push of a button, it switches between machine gun mode and single shot mode.
