Even if Kerry had not used Vietnam as a platform, the Swifties would still have attacked him. True. But it did make their charges seem more relevant to the current campaign to many people.

If Kerry had apologized somewhere along the line for things he said during his VVAW days, it would have taken a lot of the air out of the SB vets - they wouldn't have been able to get over 260 signatures (may be more now) from SB vets.
