I shook my head when David Simon, the writer/producer of "The Wire" blamed it on "deindustrialization." The problem's main cause was Johnson's "war on poverty," which started the process of enabling women with children to live off the state without a husband.

Anyway, it's [St. Thomas Housing Project] a hell hole now. Cops are afraid to go there at night. It was all white when we were there, but white people won't live there now. They feel safer in homeless shelters.

Time for you to catch up with local history:

St. Thomas no longer exists. There have been some upscale apartments and a controversial Wal-Mart built in the neighborhood. Plus, white folks stopped living there a long time ago.
