Indications are that the memos shown are poor quality copies of the real memos. The real memos were destroyed in the Bush guard coverup, so these imperfect representations are what's left.

Several people familiar with the situation said they were girding for a particularly tough week for Mr. Rather and the news division should the network announce its new doubts.

One person close to the situation said the critical question would be, "Where was everybody's judgment on that last day?''


Rather will most likely land on his feet. He has already laid the ground work for that by declaring that the sentiment of the documents accurately reflect the truth of the situation. He should have acted more quickly but CBS will not go down over this any more than the other major media outlets. It is a major coop for the blogs and Bush will benefit from the back-lash.
