Truman supported the founding of Israel. Eisenhower's views seem liberal in today's world...relative to the Bushies.

Berlin Bans Islamic Summit, Cites Terror

BERLIN (AP) - Berlin's local government on Monday banned a planned Islamic conference in the German capital that security officials feared would be a forum to preach support for terrorism.

State Interior Ministry spokeswoman Henrike Morgenstern said the city banned the Oct. 1-3 Arab Islamic Congress in Europe after concluding the conference Web site condoned suicide attacks against Israel and the United States.

Germany's top security official, Interior Minister Otto Schily, said last week that the conference ``seems to fall under the heading of justifying terrorist acts'' which would warrant a ban.

The conference Web site urged ``the liberation of all the occupied territories and countries in struggle against the American-Zionist hegemony and occupation.''

Spokesman for the event Gabriel Daher apologized to Arabs, Muslims and German authorities.

``The turbulence in the media has caused damage to the Arabs and Muslims living here, while the goal was exactly the opposite. It was indeed to avert discrimination and correct the picture of Islam,'' Daher said.

Even before the ban, German embassies and consulates had already been told to refuse visas for anyone wanting to attend the conference, and Berlin authorities deported the main organizer, Fadi Madi, to his native Lebanon on Saturday.

Reached in Beirut by telephone, Madi said there are ``alternative venues'' and steps have been taken to move the conference to Vienna, Austria.

The updated conference Web site, however, said: ``Mr. Fadi is no more authorized to edit this Web site or relate to it.''

Fadi's role now was unclear and Daher refused to comment when reached by phone.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center, which promotes Jewish human rights, congratulated German authorities on banning the gathering.

The move ``passes the message that, where there is a firm demonstration of political will, incitement to jihadist terrorism can be contained,'' wrote Shimon Samuels, the group's international director, in a letter to Schily.

Germany questions report Syria tested chemical weapons

Germany questions report Syria tested chemical weapons

BERLIN (dpa)- German intelligence sources said Wednesday they had no information, which could confirm a report claiming Syria had tested chemical weapons in cooperation with the government of Sudan on black Africans in Sudan’s troubled Darfur region.

Germany’s Die Welt newspaper - citing “Western intelligence reports” - said dozens of people were killed in the tests carried out from last May.

Frozen corpses were brought to a Khartoum hospital after the tests and examined by Syrian doctors, said the report.

The report did not identify what type of chemicals were allegedly used in Darfur but said five airplanes from Syrian Arab Airlines flew in the chemical weapons and specialists from Damascus.

“We find the details very surprising and would have evaluated them differently,” said a German intelligence source speaking on the condition of anonymity.

Asked to comment on the report a spokesman for Syria’s embassy in Berlin said: “We have nothing to say on this - the newspaper can write whatever it wants.” He refused any further comment.

In Washington, a U.S. State Department spokesman said the U.S. was ”not aware of any corroboration of the transfer of Syrian chemical weapons to Sudan”.

In a statement, the official said the U.S. would follow up on the allegations, adding: “There have been reports for several years alleging use of chemical weapons in Sudan. None of these have been corroborated.”
