Legally, lying and "reckless disregard of the truth" are considered the same. CBS at the very least is guilty of the latter. They got those docs a matter of hours before they aired the segment, had an "expert" with the wrong background "authenicate" them and even that "expert" had reservations about the documents and then they recklessly ran them on what is supposed to be a national news program.

Rather is being attacked by other TV journalists for damaging their credibility, as well he should be. He is being attacked by others at CBS. His career may be over in disgrace. As well it should be. To air such matters this close to a national election on national news without a MUCH higher degree of certainty as to their authenticity is outrageous.

Rather may be Nader Redux: He may have cost him the election.
