We used to set out a large empty coffee can, sunk in the ground like a golf cup, pour a can of beer in it and the next morning you have a starter set of drowned or drunk captive slugs. Transfer the prisoners to a suitable container, salt to taste, and/or spray some lighter fluid on the gang and ignite... voila' bird food! Or maybe just garbage can filler. One neat low class deed is to plant some beer traps in the neighbor's yard and your loyal slug population will desert you almost instantly. :)
