The ironic thing is, I don't think it would have hurt Bush if those memos had all turned out to be true. The Democrats have faith in this National Guard story like a peasant woman believes in her charm to ward off the plague - you gotta believe because there's nothing else.

The Democratic base would love more Bush/TexANG stories. But the swing voters are looking at Bush's Presidential record, not what he did 30 years ago. Not unless you could tie the National Guard stories to Bush's character somehow - arrogant or abusive, that sort of thing. Even then, I don't think it would matter much. Not for an incumbent. jmo
