I am watching the rerun of Scarbourgh. A five way discussion of the mess. The Schadenfreude is spilling out of the front of my TV set. The consensus seems to be that Lockhart was lying to USA Today when he claimed he didn't discuss the NG papers with Burkett. That was Burkett's only expertise, he knew nothing about the Swift Vets, which is what Lockhart claimed they talked about.

The only reason that Buchanan and Fineman could come up with for CBS doing this is that CBS needed the memos in order to get the Barnes on the show. Lockhart is Kerry's senior media guy. He should NEVER have had any contact with Burkett. They always use a cutout for this type of thing.

The wild card is Burkett. Nobody knows what he knows or might say.

Sasso and Lockhart came aboard a couple of weeks ago to clean up the Kerry campaign. Sasso got fired by Dukakis in '88 for getting involved in dirty politics.

So WHY did Mapes ask Lockhart to call Burkett? Only way to get Burkett to release the documents. Burkett was a master salesman. If he had handed them to Mapes she would never have believed them. But by holding out and making it look like he didn't want to give them to her, she had total belief in them when she did get them.
