COVERING THE COVERAGE
By Cori Dauber

Look at the opening paragraph of this Washington Post story on the CBS story:

The man CBS News touted as the "unimpeachable source" of explosive documents about President Bush's National Guard service turns out to be a former Guard officer with a history of self-described mental problems who has denounced Bush as a liar with "demonic personality shortcomings."

That is an absolutely stunning indictment.

The power of that paragraph, the willingness of a media giant to go after another media outlet like that, is just amazing to me.

Let me tell you something -- these people are pissed.

There are two faces of diplomacy, one you discuss behind closed doors and agree on, the other is the public face of speaking in general terms.

It is a credit to this administration that instead of making the syrian negotiation a part of the election bag of silly tricks and sound bites, they opt to keep these real issues with iraq outside of campaign rhetoric.

Let's face it, if the US were to pull out, the Sunnis in Syria would have to face the Shia in Iran and their battleground would be Iraq. And the numbers alone do not look good for the sunnis there. If the americans are to leave, the less hinged fringes of the shia and the sunni faith will have to reopen old questions about who was the real successor to Mohammed : Abu Bakar or Ali.

That would not be pretty.
